Fresh from being Game of the year win, Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 has a new, free update that adds extra levels, upgrades and boss fights the RPG. If it’s been a while since you’ve contacted Verso, Maelle, and the rest of the expedition, maybe, I don’t know, practice parrying before tackling the new content, because even the sickies who were already dodging the game’s most elaborate attacks are having trouble with these challenging battles.

The “Thank You Update,” as Sandfall Interactive calls it, includes an Endless Tower, with updated boss battles from the base game for an extra challenge. ChiaroscuroThe boss battles and secret battles in the late game were already daunting tasks, and now the game has added a plethora of new battles that are exhausting just to watch. Check out how long this combo lasts in the new Duollistes battle:

Some of the update’s challenges come from a seemingly endless barrage of attacks, but much of the combat is fairly standard Chiaroscuro agree that they trick you with multiple fakeout attacksluring you into dodging and parrying before an enemy actually strikes, disrupting your rhythm and leaving you open to attack.

Oh, and one boss will destroy your team instantly. Good luck parrying it.

Chiaroscuro fans are no strangers to challenging boss battles, but some feel the Thank You Update’s boss run is too much. This account of Reddit user Maggot_6661 summarizes:

“I really love this game,” they wrote. “This update is great, but these bosses are too much. Unless I spend the entire 9 to 5 learning the reaction times that only a robot can achieve, I will never beat them. I’ve had to spend all day looking for a job and suffering disappointment after disappointment. I’m not mentally strong enough to suffer through these bosses afterwards. All it does is make me not like the game… and that’s something I don’t want to happen.”

Sometimes walking away from the biggest challenges a game has to offer is the right decision. To this day, I’ve never played some of the secret bosses Final Fantasy Xand I have art from that game tattooed on my arm. I think I’d rather just enjoy the game I played than beat my head against the wall during some of the more challenging battles, so I won’t judge anyone for walking away Chiaroscuro‘s Endless Tower. For those of you who did beat them, thank you for your service. “For those who come after.”
